The research was conducted to investigate cold storage techniques of gladiolus bulbs to increase sprouting rate and uniformity and to reduce rotting problem. The experiments consisted of post-harvest time storage treatment, storage duration, and post treatment planting date. Results indicated that, the bulbs after 30 days after harvest stored at 50C for 90 days showed lowest rotting percentage (5.2%), but high sprouting and rooting rate (85.4% and 85.6%, respectively). The lowest of bulb rotting percentage and better growth and development were observed in bulbs planted at 10 days of post-cold storage treatment
Effects of Harvest Maturity and Low Temperature Storage on Quality of Tomato Fruit cv. Savior

This experiment was performed to explore the effects of harvest maturity and low temperature storage on qualityof tomato cv. Savior. Tomato wascultivated in winter season and fruits were harvested at 3 ripening stages,breakersstage, turning stage and pink stageandpacked in PE bags 0.03 mm thickness, then stored at 12oC and 18oC. Fruit quality was examined every week after removing from cold room and keptat ambient temperature for 1 hr. The results demonstrated that i) at 12oC, tomato fruitsharvested at breakersstage had the lowest respiration rate, therefore,they had a low rate of weight loss and little change infruit firmness. Fruit color slightly changed during low temperature storageand no decay was observed after 28 days of storage. ii) At 18oC, tomato fruitsharvested at pink striped color stage had the best quality after 14 days of storage. Skin color and carotenoid content of these fruitswere similar to those of natural ripe fruitsin the plant. From the results found in this study the recommendations could be madeforgrowers to choose ripening stage suitable for their storage conditions to meet the diversemarket demands.
Effects of Cooling Methods on Sperm Quality in Boar Semen Preservation at Low Temperature

This study was conducted on 720 semen samples of six Duroc boars to evaluate the effects of the different cooling methods on semen quality when stored at low temperatures in an extender without antibiotics. Semen was diluted in a modified BTS extender without antibiotics. Semen samples were cooled from 30°C to 5°C using five different cooling rates before stored at 5°C. Diluted semen was investigated after 24h, 48h, 72h and 120h of preservation. The results showed that: the lowest cooling rate sample (5-A4: 2h at room temperature, then stored at 10°C for 3 h) had sperm motility, abnormal acrosome, as well as morphology in different days of storage, which did not differ from semen samples stored at 17°C (P >0.05). Effect of Postharvest Treatment Using Anti-Browning Chemicals on Quality and Shelf-Life in Cool Storage of Lao CaiPeach Fruits

Browning isa major problem in fresh peach preservation. In this study, ascorbic acid and citric acid were used as anti-browning agents in pre-storage treatment in order to prevent the browning and prolong storage life of peach fruit harvested from Laocai Province. The research results showed that ascorbic acid and citric acid slowed down browning process and decay as well as physiological changes in the storage fruit. Different concentrations of acids were also tested and ascorbic 1,0% was proved to be the best option among the test combinations. Peach fruit which pre-storage treated with 1.0% ascorbic acid can be preserved up to 28 days.

Trialswereconducted to investigate the effects of an ephippium (resting eggs) production method and the influences of different storage conditions and durations on hatching rate of Moina micruraephippiafor live feed producing actively and hygienically.M. micrurawere cultured in 120-lit tanks and covered with black plastic to make a photoperiodofL:D=0:24 at the time of the highest density to stimulate resting eggs formation. The harvested resting eggs were introduced into trials of egg quality examination and treated with two methods: dried in room condition (28-35C) for 2 days and dried in an oven at 45C for 6h, followed by storage duration of 1 and 6 weeks in dark, 4-5C conditions. The rate of male andephippium broodreached14.5% and 69.0%, respectively,after 5 daysof the induction treatment. The rate of resting eggs with embryo was at 65.2% on average. Resting eggs started hatching at around 36h (3 days) of incubation, while the hatching rates reached 14.3-16.9% for all of the treatments. No significant difference in hatching rate and the starting time of hatchingwas foundamong the treatments of storage methods and durations.
Effects of Collection Frequency and Duration of Storage on Semen Quality of Hac Phong Chickens

This study was conducted to evaluate the semen quality of Hac Phong chickens raised at the Faculty of Animal Science, Vietnam National University of Agriculture. In the first experiment, a total of 30 semen samples from 6 Hac Phong roosters were collected in two frequencies, i.e., every day and every three days. Semen characteristics included semen volume, sperm concentration, motility, and abnormal sperm percentage. In the second experiment, rooster semen wasstored in two different media A and B at 5C. Studied parameters were tested after 8 and 24 hours of storage. The results showed that semen volume, sperm concentration, and sperm motility were higher if semen was collected every three days (P <0.05). The percentage of morphologically abnormal spermatozoa was higher if semen was collected every day (P <0.05), however, other criteria did not differ (P >0.05). When rooster semen waspreserved at 5C, the motility rate decreased from 65.38%at 8 hours to 49.84% after 24 hours of storage in medium A and from66.64%at 8 hours to 52.02% after 24 hours of storage in medium B. There was no difference in semen quality between the two media A and B (P >0.05). In both extenders, when the duration of storage was extended from 8 to 24 hours, the sperm motility decreased (P <0.05).
Effect of 1-Methylcyclopropene on the Storage Life of Litchi Fruits (Litchi sinensis Sonn.)

The objective of this study was to determine the effiect of 1-MCP, an inhibitor of cell ethylene receptor, at various concentrations on preseved litchi fruits (Litchi sinensis Sonn.. cv. Thieu). The fruits were harvested from the local orchards in Bac Giang and transported to laboratory within 3 hours. Maturity-uniform litchi fruits without any defects were selected and treated with 1-MCP at the concentrations of 0.300 and 600 ppb for 12 hours. Following treatment, litchi fruits were kept at 4°C for storage. The results indicated that 1-MCP has positive effect on maintaining the quality of litchi fruits cv. Thieu. The most effective treatment to preserve the litchi quality after storage was 600 ppb 1-MCP for 12 hours. This concentration reduced weight loss and delayed changes of skin color and browning, minimised the loss of TSS, sugar and vitamin C content within 1 month storage.
The Effects of postharvesttreatment with 1-Methylcyclopropene on Quality and Losses of Avocado Fruits in Storage

A study was caried out to examine the effect of post-harvest treatment with 1-methylcyclopropene on avocado fruits in storage. The avocado fruits(Persea americana Mill.) at 20 weeks after flowering were harvested from orchard in Kam Leo, Thang Hoa, Daklak province in year 2011. The quality of avocado fruits was identified in terms of the firmness at 35.50 kg/cm2. Total sugar content of 7.20%, total acid content of 0.05%, vitamin C content of 68 mg%. The avocado samples were exposed with 1-MCP at the concentrations: 300ppm, 400ppm, 500ppm, 600ppm, 700ppm during the time of 12, 15, 18, 21, 24 hours, then kept at ambient temperature ( 25 to 300C; RH of 85 to 90%). Research results of single factors show that the quality of avocado fruits exposured with 1-MCP at the concentration of 500ppm during 12 hours is the best, which has weight losses lower than 10% compared with other samples after 12-day storage. Research results of multi-factor show that weight loss is lowest after 12 day storage when the concentration of 1-MCP for preserving avocado is 500 ppm and the time of 1-MCP treatment is 13hours30mins.
Effect of Postharvest Treatment on Quality Changes of Longan CvHuong Chi during Cold Storage

Longan (Dimocarpus longan) fruit is one of the most popular fruits in Viet Nam. However, postharvest pericarp browning and rapid decay limit the postharvest life of longan fruit. In the present study, the effect of different postharvest treatments on fruit quality was investigated. The incidence of microbial disease, browning index, weight loss, polyphenol content and other nutrional quality attributes were determined at harvest and 10, 20, 30, 35 days after storage. Results suggested that pericarp browning, microbial disease, and fruit quality deterioration could be better delayed compared to the control at 35 days after storage by dipping fruits in carbendazim 0.1%, followed by oxalic acid 4 mM, finally packed in polypropylene bag with 0.008% of relative perforation area and stored at 4 ±1oC and relative humidity of 95%.
Factors Affecting the Hatchability ofChicken’Eggs

eAn experiment was conducted to evaluate several factors affecting the hatchability of Luong Phuong’ eggs on the multi-period incubator in a completely randomized design. The results showed that prolonged egg storage time reduced the rate of embryonated eggs and hatchability but increased embryonated egg mortality. The relationship between egg storage time and embryonated egg rate was strong inversely correlated (r = -0,919; P<0,05). Spawning time during a day affected hatchability. The percentage of embryonated eggs and hatching rate reached the lowest in the egg plots laid before 7am. The highest rate was recored in the egg plots laid from 11am to 13 pm (P<0,05). There was no significant difference in the remaining spawning times. The age of hens also affected hatching parameters (P<0,05). The highest quantity and proportion of embryonated eggs were obtained in laying hen aged between 32-34 weeks. The percentage of hatched/embryonated eggs was lower at 27 weeks of age compared to that of 33-36 weeks of age (P<0,05). The highest hatchability was recorded in eggs weighing from 52-56g. Eggs having shape index in the range from 1.31 to 1.35 had higher hatchability than others (P<0.05). Egg disinfection by formaldehyde showed better hatchability compared to that disinfected by nebutol (P<0,05).

Một kỹ thuật mới dựa trên phổ huỳnh quang diệp lục HarvestWatchTM đặt trong môi trường bảo quản khí quyển điều chỉnh có nồng độ oxy thấp được thử nghiệm trên giống táo Greenstar để phát hiện thời điểm nồng độ oxy giảm quá thấp gây bất lợi cho hoạt động sinh lý của quả. Mục tiêu của nghiên cứu này là phát triển mô hình để dự đoán phản ứng của táo bảo quản trong môi trường có nồng độ oxy rất thấp. Để đạt được mục tiêu này mô hình hồi quy tuyến tính được xây dựng dựa trên số liệu thực nghiệm để diễn tả sự phụ thuộc của giá trị chênh lệch của chlorophyll fluorescence (Δ Fα) đối với các nồng độ oxy bất lợi. Mô hình tuyến tính ARX được đề xuất để dự đoán giá trị chlorophyll fluorescence (Fα) ở các mức ức chế khác nhau. Kết quả nghiên cứu cho thấy hệ thống HarvestWatchTM có thể được phát triển để duy trì tối đa chất lượng quả táo khi bảo quản bằng công nghệ điều chỉnh khí quyển động.
Sự thay đổi độ màu của mật chè tinh khi lưu trữ tại thùng chứa trước khi kết tinh đường

Hàm lượng phenol tổng số và độ màu của mật chè tinh được phân tích trong 5 tháng mùa vụ sản xuất. Kết quả cho thấy có mối tương quan thuận giữa hàm lượng phenol tổng số và độ màu của mật chè. Sự ảnh hưởng của thời gian lưu trong thùng chứa và độ pH của mật chè đến sự thay đổi độ màu của mật chè cũng được phân tích nghiên cứu. Kết quả cho thấy độ màu mật chè tăng lên đáng kể theo thời gian lưu đặc biệt trong môi trường mật chè có độ acid cao (pH thấp).

Melon (Cucumis melo) is a crop of economic value and suitable for growing in greenhouses in North Vietnam. In the present study, we examined the influenceof storage conditions on thepollen germinability of introduced melon cultivars. The research aimed to determine the optimal conditions to preserve pollensfor application in the production, breeding, and selection of melons. Pollen grains of 4 melon cultivars, i.e.Bach Ngoc, Kim Hoang Hau, Gia Huy, and Makuwa were collected and preserved under different temperatures (25C, 8C, and -20C), relative humidities (20%, 40%, 60%), and organic solvents (acetone, n-hexane, cyclohexane, diethyl ether, and absolute alcohol). Pollen germination rates were tested in vitroin 1% agar medium containing 15% sucrose and 5 ppm boric acidfor3 to 30 days depending on experiments. Results showed that when dried and kept under -20C and 20% relative humidity, melon pollen grains sustainedtheir germinabilityat approx 50% at 30 daysafter storage.
Effect of Postharvest Treatment With1-Methylcyclopropene on the Quality and Storage Life of Green Onionin Atmospheric Condition

The aim of this study is to identify the optimum mode of postharvest treatment with 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) forgreen onion (Allium fistulosum) in order to remain quality and prolong storage life at ambient condition. The two factors, concentration of 1-MCP and time exposed to 1-MCP, were taken into account. Singer factor experiment on concentration of 1-MCP was carried out first (with 6 concentrations of 0; 100; 200; 300; 400; 500ppm) along with 8 hours exposed to the chemical. Then the singer factor experiment on time exposed to 1-MCP was conducted (with 5 levels of 2; 5; 8; 11; and 14hours) along with the best 1-MCP concentration selected from previous experiment. Analyzed parameters include yellowingrates, chlorophyll, vitaminC content and their changes during storage period. The best green onion was obtained from the treatment with 200ppmfor8 hours exposed to 1-MCP. Also, two factors experiment was made in order to see interactions between them and look for the most optimal modeof 1-MCP postharvest treatmentforgeen onion. The results showed that the treatment laid on 208,9 ppm 1-MCP for 7 hours 44 minutes gave highest quality green onion in atmospheric condition.

Effects of Packaging to Quality of Strawberry by Hyokan Technology

The study investigated suitable packaging materials for strawberry storage with Hyokan technology. Strawberries were harvested at 80% full-ripen when the fruit skin changed to red and stored using Hyokan technology at -2C, electric pressure 3.500V. Four packaging materials were investigated, including PE foam, PE clings film, filter paper and plastic box. The control sample was kept at 2-4C in a regular refrigerator. The control sample showed a significant decrease in sensory quality, nutritional quality and microorganisms. The fruit covered by PE cling film (CT5) had the best nutritional quality and sensory score, and microorganism. By using the Hyokan technology and PE cling film, after 21 days storage, the weight loss was 0.31%, waste 13.89%, TSS 7.83Bx, total axit1.15% and vitamin C 13.38 mg/g; the sensory score was a distinction; the total aerobic microorganism was within the standard 46/2007 QĐ-BYT.
Enhancing the Antimicrobial Activity of Pectin-Alginate Biofilm and its Application in Preservation of Fresh Passion Fruits (Passiflora edulisSims)

The present study was aimed to enhance the antimicrobial activity of Pec-Alg film-forming solution. Nanobubbles (NBs), cinnamon essential oil (Cinna) and chlorine (Chlo) were three potential substances added to Pec-Alg solutions. The microbial inhibitory effect was evaluated in vitro, and the Pec-Alg solutions were directly applied to passion fruits to evaluate the antimicrobial effect, the rate of disease transmission during storage, and the quality changes of passion fruit through physiological, mechanical and biochemical parameters. The results showed that the solutions of Pec-Alg supplemented with NBs or Cinna or Chlo all had high inhibitory effect in vitro conditions with 86.7%, 74.1% and 93.6%, respectively. Moreover, they had a positive inhibitory effect on microorganisms on passion fruits in the following order: Pec-Alg-Chlo > Pec-Alg-NBs > Pec-Alg-Cinna, of which Pec-Alg-Chlo solution had the highest inhibitory effect, reaching 84.4% at 1 hour after coating and 43.6% after 30 days of storage.They were also significantly effective to limit the rate of disease transmission during storage, contributing to prolong the shelf life of passion fruits up to 33 days, which means an increase of 15 days compared to the control and an increase of 9 days compared to Pec-Alg coating without addition ofany antimicrobial agents.
Effect of Postharvest Treatment of 1-Methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) on (Storage) Quality of ‘Savior’ Tomato Grown in Summer

The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of 1-MCP on fruit quality of ‘Savior’ tomato grown in summer (off-season) during postharvest storage. Tomatoes at mature green stage wereharvested,treated with 1-MCP at 5 µl.l-1at 18C for 24h, and then stored at 18C. The results showed that the degreening, softening, and the respiration rate were retarded in 1-MCP treated tomatoes compared to the control fruit. Furthermore, 1-MCP increased the acidity of the fruit. Theeffect of 1-MCP as ripening retardant at a concentration of 5 µl.l-1can be applied for post-harvest preservation of summer-grown 'Savior' tomatoes.
Germination Characteristics of some Wild Banana Species and Effect of Storage Conditions on the Germination Rate of Musa balbisiana

Banana is the most important fruit crop in the world. Using wild bananas as parents in the breeding programs can help develop new banana varieties with pest and disease resistance, high yield, and cold and drought tolerance. The goals of our research were to find out the different germination characteristics of wild banana species and storage conditions on the germination to conserve wild banana resources and to use these wild banana species as materials for future breeding programs. The general experiment evaluation of seed germination was arranged according to the “cutting test” method of and). The experiment of evaluation in different stored conditions of Musa balbisiana seeds was seeded in a fully randomized block with three replications. The results showed that the germination rate of Musa balbisiana collected from western mountainous areas was higher than seeds collected from other regions. The seed germination rate of Musa balbisiana species was up to 27.53%, higher than that of M. acuminata (9.43%), M. itinerans (12.67%)and M. paracoccinea (0%). Stored at silica gel with 15.5% RH and room temperature 25C, Musa balbisiana gave the germination rate up 45.33% (VTN858), while those same samples stored in regrigerator at 4C and 19.5% RH gave only from 6.67% (VTN858).

Effects of Postharvest Treatment by Propionic Acid in Combination with Wax Coating onQuality of Purple Passion Fruit (Passiflora edulisSims.)

The research aimedto identify the concentration effects of propionic acid (AP) combined with a membrane coated with a mixture of beeswax and carnauba wax (MW) at a concentration of 8% on quality and storage time of postharvest purple passion fruit. After being washed and left to dry, the fruits were dipped in AP solution0.25; 0.35; and 0.45% for 10 minutes.After being left to dry again, the fruits were coated with 8% MW. After continuing to be left to dry, the fruits were placed in a foam tray put in carton boxes and stored at 5 ± 1°C, RH = 85 ± 2%. The untreated fruits and uncoated fruits were used as controls. The respiration rate, the percentage of weight loss, the total soluble solids (TSS) content, the total titrable acidity(TTA) and vitamin C content, the total microorganism population on the surface of the fruits and the percentage of fruits decay were analyzed and evaluated throughout the storage period. Research results showed that AP at a concentration of 0.45% combined with8% MW coating (CT3) is the best treatment for reducing the respiration rate, the total microorganism population on the surface of the fruits, the percentage of fruits decay and weight loss, slowly reduced TSS, TTA and vitamin C content. After 42 days in storage purple passion fruit treated by CT3 had the percentage of general loss including weight loss and decay is 11.9% in comparison with the control sample had the percentage of general loss is 96.2%.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of tea seed oil (TSO) compared with the addition of some antioxidant substancessuch as BHA, BHT, d-α-tocopherol during storagetime(at 60C for 12 days according to the Schaal experiment, 2010) for susceptible oils such as linseed oil (LSO) and walnut oil (WNO). Peroxide (PV) and Para-anisidine (P-av) values were monitored during oxidation of the two oils at 0and 12 days of storage. The Totox value has assessed the formation of LSO first and second oxidation products after 12 days of storage in the control and formula supplemented with 0.02% BHA + BHT, 0.03% tocopherol, 3% TSO, 6% TSO respectively 176.06; 139.3; 154.38; 138.34 and 110.31. In WNO, this value was 204.56 respectively; 173.12; 177.93; 170.46 and 154.29. In this study, TSO was shown to have higher potential than BHA, BHT, tocopherol when blended with 6% TSO. Blending 3% TSO had preservation effect as good as BHA + BHT at the concentrations of 0.0 2% and D-α-tocopherol at 0.03% in inhibiting the oxidation of LSO and WNO.
Effects of Hot Water Treatment Combining with 1-Methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) on Storage Time after Harvest of Passion Fruit (Passiflora edulisSims)

Passion fruits after harvest were treated with hot water atdifferent temperatures (44C, 48C and 52C) for 5 minutes and soaked in 1-Methylcyclopropene solution (440ppb, 490ppb and 540ppb) during 80 seconds. After drying, the fruits were placed in styrofoam trays inside carton boxes and stored at 5 ± 1C, 80-90% r.h. The treatments withouthot water and 1-MCP treatments were used as the control. Results showed that the treatments with hot water treatment at 48C for 5 minutes combining with 1-MCP at 490ppb for 80 seconds gained the climacteric respiration peak and had ethylene production later than control treatment. The study also identified the quality indicators of passion fruit after 39 storage days under the above conditions, i.e. soluble dry matter content 17.803%, vitamin C content 34.967 mg/100g; and total phenolic content 55.044 ml/100l.
Effects of Postharvest Treatment on the Quality of Bac Kan Mandarin

Mandarin (Citrus reticulata)belongs to the citrus fruit family, has a high risk of damage due to contamination on fruit shells, the peel is crispy and easy to crush. This study aimed to identify the suitable postharvest treatment to prolong storage shelf-lifeof Bac Kan mandarin. The mandarin fruits were treated with 4 treatments: (i) distilled water washing (control); (ii) fruit treated with lime 1% on the stem; (iii) fruit washed with ozone solution on the skin; (iv) fruit dipped in ethanol 70% on the skin. The results showed that the treatment mode on ozone and ethanol gave higher quality mandarin when compared to other treatments. Especially, the ozone treatment gave the most effective in prolonging shelf-life of ‘Bac Kan’ mandarin, reach 33 days storage in low temperature (6±1C) and LDPE film packaging with the decay rate of the fruit is very low (4,2%).
Semen Quality and Some Factors Affacting TheSemen Quality of Dong Tao Chicken

The study was conducted on 11 Dong Tao cocks (8 - 10 months of age) at the chicken farm, Faculty of Animal Science, Vietnam National University of Agriculture to evaluate the semen quality and factors (individual, time of semen collection and storage condition) affecting semen quality from January to December 2016. The results showed that Dong Tao cocks had good semen quality in terms of ejaculation volume, pH, motility and sperm concentration. The semen color was 2.60 (between white to milk color) and the activity of sperms was 3.99 (well moving with waves at moderate level). The individuality factor affected all criteria of semen quality (P < 0.05). The motility and concentration of sperms collected in the morning were higher than those collected in the afternoon (P < 0.05). Sperm motility of diluted semen kept in the cold storage (2 - 10oC) was higher than that kept at room temperature (P < 0.05).
