IMPACTS OF COMMUNITY BASED TRAINING ON PESTICIDE RISK REDUCTION

Pesticide risks in terms of hazard and exposure are expected to reduce through community based farmer training. With this regards, a community based training program on pesticide risk reduction (PRR) has been implemented in Vietnam since 2007. With two data sets on 94 pesticide users before and after PRR training in PRR and control communes of Hanoi city and Thai Binh province, this paper shows that: The program has improved farmers’ awareness/knowledge and their behaviors in PRR, and enabled farmers to reduce hazards and exposure. Farmers used pesticides permited for vegetables, used more biopesticides and class III and IV pesticides. On the exposure side, positive impacts were more proper pesticide use techniques; use of more protective equipment and better unused pesticides and sprayer management. As a result, the environmental impact quotients were reduced sharply from 20% to 78%.
Delaying Flowering of Tobacco Variety K326 by Supplemental Lighting,Night Interruption Lighting and Detopping

Early flowering is undesirable in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacumL.) production because it reduces yield and quality of raw materials. This study was carried out to determine the possibility of delaying floral induction and flowering without causing undesirable side-effects to the plants. Flue-cured tobacco plants of cultivar K326 were treated with various combinations day length and night break lighting under nethouse conditions. Four hours supplemental lighting (prolong day length duration, equivalent to 16hours/8hours day/night) and one-hour middle-of-night interruption were able to delay flower induction/flowering of the short - day tobacco plants cv. K326. Detopping of plants under field conditions to induce new branch also prolonged days to flowering. If night interruption or supplemental lighting was implemented continuously for 10 or more cycles, flowering could be delayed by 28 to 30days. Detopping to promote branching at 5th and 10thleaf position delayed flowering by 8 days and yielded in increased leaf number and size in comparison with the control.
Knowledge, Attitude and Application of Safety Measures in Pesticide Use: A Case of Tea Farmers in Binh Thuan Commune, Dai Tu District, Thai Nguyen Province

This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes and levels of application of safety measures in the use of pesticides by tea farmers. Primary data were collected by interviewing 60 tea farmers using a structured-questionnaire in Binh Thuan commune, Dai Tu district, Thai Nguyen province. The survey results showed that the tea farmers still hadlimited knowledge of toxicity groups of pesticides based on information on pesticide containers and how to treat pesticide containers after use. The tea farmers hada high level of interest in the harmful effects of pesticides on human health, but only on an average level of environmental damage, especially for natural enemiesbeneficial for crops. The research results also showed that people hadapplied relatively good safety measures in pesticide use, except still regularly poured the waterfrom washingpesticide sprayer into canals or ponds and occasionally discarded pesticide containers after use right on the tea farms where the pesticideswereprepared for spraying. The gender of the household heads, participation in training, area of agricultural landand household income from agriculturewere the factors affecting the knowledge, attitudes and levels of application of safety measures in pesticide use on tea farms.These results provide necessary information to local authorities and relevant organizations in deciding suitable pesticide management measures to protect the human health and the environment.
State Management of Farm Households’ Pesticide Use in Thai Binh Province

Thai Binh province has over 70 percent of population who still live on farming activities. This means that pesticide has been used with a big amount and in large cultivated area. Almost all farmers used pesticide based on their experiences, so pesticide overusing is happened overwhelmingly. Carried out in Hung Ha and Quynh Phu district, this study showed that state management of households’ pesticide use is not strictly enough in these two locations. Reasons are that fact that the state policies of pesticide management have been slowly implemented. Simultaneously, mornitoring activities have not been paid much attention. Lack of human, financial, and equipmental resources influenced state management of pesticide use. In order to improve the state management of pesticide use, the study recommended major solutions including organization improvement; human, financial and equipmental resource enhancement; and building up an organization for pesticide use management at commune level.
Effect of Accotab on sucker controlcapacity, growth, devepopment and yield of waterpipe tobaco

After cutting apical buds, the axilary buds The rapid emergence of suckers or axillary buds after topping significantly decreases the yield and quality of waterpipe tobaco material. The sucker removal by hand results in increased labor cost. Using Accotab for sucker control was carried out with variety Re Den in the Spring 2011 and 2012 at Tien Lang. Hai Phong.The experimentwas conducted with Accotab concentrations of 1; 1.2 and 1.5% in order to determine the most appropriate concentration for sucker control without affecting yield and quality of the products. Experimental results showed that treatment of Accotab decreased the number, length and weight of axilary buds, but increased the leaf size and productivity of waterpipe tobaco products. Accotab concentration of 1.2% was found most optimal; this concentration brought highest yield (1625 kg/ha) and highest economic efficiency (79.56 million/ha).
Morphological Characteristics and Productive performance of Co Lung Ducks

The study was conducted on Co Lung ducks in Ba Thuoc district, Thanh Hoa province and Co Lung ducks on the third generation at Dai Xuyen Duck Research Center to survey the numbers, distributions of Co Lung ducks in Ba Thuoc district and evaluate morphological characteristics of Co Lung ducks. The results showed that the number and distribution of Co Lung ducks in Ba Thuoc district are mainly congregated at 6 communes of Quoc Thanh area, including Ban Cong, Co Lung, Lung Niem, Lung Cao, Thanh Lam and Thanh Son commune. Co Lung ducks have been raised by both grazing and semi-grazing methods. Feed sources used were self-mixed feed and local agricultural production. It was observed that at one day of age, the plumage color is mostly dark gray and pale yellow. In mature, the plumage color is mostly dark brown. The main morphological characteristics of Co Lung duck is: short leg, big head, short neck and medium body. The length of the body of Co Lung duck is 24.72cm in male and 24.82cm in the female; the breast size of the male is 30.06cm, the female is 29.80cm with breast size/ body length ratio of 1.22 and 1.20; The feet height of a male is 7.58cm and female is 7.35cm; The length of wing feathers of male and female duck are 16.36 and 16.23cm respectively.
Farmers’ Compliance with Pesticide Use Principles in Vegetable Production in Thanh Hoa City

The compliance with pesticide use principles is required in agriculture production, especially in vegetable production due to its relation to food safety, human health, environment and economic efficiency. This study used primary data from a survey of 99 vegetable farmng households in Thanh Hoa city to evaluate the situation and determine the factors affecting the farmers’ compliance with pesticide use principles. Exploratory Factor Analysis with 25 specific criteria was used to determine the impact of each principle on farmers’ compliance. The results showed that the “Right pesticide for a right crop’’ principle had the highest impact, followed by the principles "Right method of application" and “Right dose and ingredient’’. Therefore, to enhance the famers’ compliance with pesticide use principles, it is necessary to strengthen the propaganda, training, management and supervision on the pesticide use according to the priority of the impact level of the aforementioned principles.

Through the initial survey,fix somewith constantparameters and experimental welding with about input parameterintervals and evaluating output parameters, determining the followingparameters of welding conditionswere determined: welding current Ih≈ 440 Aand,welding speed Vh≈ 19,.6 m/h. Sustainable Livelihood Development of Forest-dependent People in the Highland of BacKan Province

The aim of this study was to assess sustainable livelihood development of forest-dependent people in the highland areas of Bac Can province. Data were collected through direct interviews of265 households living near forests in the districts of Ba Be and Na Ri. Descriptive statistics, comparisonsusing student T-test, Chi-square and Likert scale were used. Results revealed ahigh degree of the househods’ forest-dependence, limited income and medium sustainable livelihood development. High level of forest dependence was evidenced withthe fact that the higher forest-dependent strategy the lower level of sustainable development of livelihood. To enforce the policy of sustainable livelihood development, the government should adopt measures to reduce reliance on the forest, improve income for the households, and maintain social relationships and ecological environment.
Study on Species Diversity of Macrofungi Belonging to the Phylum Basidiomycota in Son Tra Nature Reserve, Da Nang

This study was conducted to understand the diversity of species composition of macrofungi belonging to the phylum Basidiomycota in Son Tra Nature Reserve, Da Nang city by performing a line transect survey in 3 sub-areas divided into 15 different areas. Macrofungi specimens were collected at altitudes between 300 and 690 m above sea level. Among the specimens collected, we have identified 110 taxa belonging to 42 genera, 23 families, 10 orders, and 3 classes of the phylum Basidiomycota. Among them, species such as Microporus xanthopusand Stereum hirsutumare encountered more frequent during the sampling process. The life-styles of Basidiomycota macrofungi in Son Tra were either saprophytic, parasitic or symbiotic. The classification revealed that they can be divided into medicinal group, edible group, or group containing decomposers of organic matter to create humus for the soil. However, some species e also belonged to poisonous group.
Identificationof Oyster Mushroom (Pleurotusspp.) Strains in the South Vietnam based on Morphological Characteristics and ITS Sequencing

Oyster mushrooms (Pleurotusspp.) are one of the most commonly cultivated mushrooms in the world. In Vietnam, Pleurotus mushrooms have been popularly grown, especially in the southern region. The classification of oyster mushrooms is important in conservation and development of genetic resources. One of the primary methods for accurate classification of oyster mushrooms is based on their macroscopic and microscopic characteristics. Besides, classification based on the analysis of consensus sequences was widely applied, with ITS being the most used sequence region in fungal genetics. The objective of this study was to identify 15 oyster mushroom strains collected from the southern region through a combination of morphological characteristic analysis and ITS sequencing. The results showed that 10 strains were identified as P. pulmonarius, while 5 other strains were identified as P. ostreatus. The identification results based on ITS sequences were compatible with the morphological identifications. Following the phylogenetic tree based on ITS sequences, 10 phoenix cultivars belonged to P. pulmonariusclade, supported by a bootstrap value of 88%. The oyster cultivars and blue oyster cultivar belonged to Pleurotus cf. floridanus(P. ostreatus species), supported by a bootstrap value of 80%. The results of this study increased the basic data for identification and conservation purposes.
Evaluation of Effects of Herbal Product PremixHad and Doxycycline on Feed Conversion Ratio and Small Intestinal Villus Measurements in Swiss albino Mice

Thí study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of herbal product PremixHad and doxycycline on feed intakes, feed conversion ratios and villus measurements of small intestine in Swiss albino mice via growth parameters and micro-morphological measurements. The results showed that PremixHad supplement in feed with concentrations of 1.25%; 2.5%; 5.0% and doxycycline (2g per liter of drinking water) were safe for the mice. Supplement concentation at 1.25% improved BW gain. PH and doxycycline increased feed efficiency via the decrease of FCR. PH showed good effects on height, width and height/width ratios of duodenal and jejunal villi but no effect on ileal villus sizes. Meanwhile, doxycycline decreased these parameters in the mouse illeum. It can be said that PH is safe with positive effects on the intestinal health of Swiss albino mice and should be tested in livestock animals to confirm the effectiveness.
Otolith Morphology Description of some Reef Fishesin the Coastal Areas of Cat Ba and Tho Chu Islands

The study focused on describing the otolith morphology of 14 fish species in the territorial sea areas of Cat Ba (Hai Phong) and Tho Chu (Kien Giang) islands. Using the descriptive method of the authors Harkonen, Campana, Svetocheva; Brodeur. The results showed that otoliths had various shapes and structures such as bow-shaped ellipse (Sargocentron rubrum…), leaf-shaped (Hemiramphus sp…), disc-shaped (Plotosus lineatus…); rostrum,antirostrum(Pentapodus setosus - long;Sargocentron rubrum - unclear), ostium, cauda - shallow, deep(Selaroides leptolepis -shallow; Crenimugil pedaraki- deep…). The otolith size measured using the software Olympus cellSens Standard 2.2 and the ShapeR package in the R programming language.The results indicated thatthere existed differences in otolith size between species (F >> 1; P<0,05).The average size OL, OW, P of Longfin mullet (Crenimugil pedaraki) was highest (OL = 8.03 ± 0.12; OW = 4.07 ± 0.08; P = 24.38 ± 0.15) and the size of Decorated ponyfish(Nuchequula gerreoides)wassmallest (OL = 0.75 ± 0.01; OW = 0.37 ± 0.02; P = 1.35 ± 0.112). The ratio OL/OW has the highest value for tropical sand goby (Acentrogobius caninus)(0,84) and the lowest value for shrimp scad (Alepes djedaba)(0.34).This ratio was different between species (F = 169.1; P <0.05).
Introduced Land Snails in the Northwest Vietnam: Existing and Potential Risks

Research on introduced land snails was carried out from 2012 to 2020 in Northwest Vietnam (Lai Chau, Lao Cai, Dien Bien, Son La, Yen Bai, and Hoa Binh Provinces). A total of nine species (nearly 4.5% of the total number of land molluscs species in the research area) representing eight genera and five families were enumerated based on field surveys of 91 sampling sites. Five species (Lissachatina fulica, Allopeas gracile, Sarika resplendens, Bradybaena similaris, Succinea tenuis) were recorded frequently disturbed in habitats, while three species (Allopeas clavulinum, Chalepotaxis infantilis, Gulella bicolor) in relatively undisturbed habitats, and a species (Ganesella perakensis) in natural habitats. Of these, three species were considered to cause low risks (Allopeas clavulinum, Chalepotaxis infantilis, Ganesella perakensis), two medium risks (Gulella bicolor, Succinea tenuis), and four high risks (Lissachatina fulica, Allopeas gracile, Sarika resplendens, Bradybaena similaris). This paper’s data is urgently required to identify and manage introduced land snail species and if possible to prevent their spread to noninfected areas in Vietnam.
Initial Research on the Effects of Two Chemical Products of Duponts Prevathon 5SC and Radiant 60SC on the Rate of Prevention of Fall Armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) onMaize

This study aimed to use two insecticidal products, Dupont Prevathon 5SC and Radiant 60SC,to manage the infestation of the Fall Armyworm on maize. These products have shown the highest effective insecticide, less toxic to humans and the environment. The experiments were conducted at the Plant Research and Development Institute in the Autumn-Winter 2019, using two low-toxic insecticides: Dupont Prevathon 5SC (active ingredient Chlorantraniliprole 5 percent) and Radiant 60SC (active ingredient Spinetoram 60 percent), the dosage of the drug as recommended by the manufacturer. The results have identified the combination spray formula Chlorantraniliprole 5 percent + Spinetoram 60 percent, repeated spraying results in the highest fall glue insecticide, eliminating 100 percent of insects on trees after 7 days of spraying and has not caused the effect on the final corn yields.
Behavior of Farmers in using Plant Protection Chemicals for VietGAP Production of Cabbage in Van Duc Commune, Gia Lam District

Van Duc, Gia lam, Hanoi is one of the first selected communes to pilot and pioneer in the application of the VietGAP standards in cabbage production. By the qualitative and quantitative information was collected by various tools, the study focused on analyzing the current status and behavioral differences between VietGAP and traditional farmers in pesticide use. The results showed that VietGAP farmers' behavior had positive changes compared to that of the traditional group leading to a significant decrease in the amount of pesticide in the crop but the level was not still really high as required. The main reason is that farmers' qualifications and knowledge are still limited, the inspection and supervision are not regular, theconsumer market is not stable. In order to promote and create motivation for farmers to strictly implement the regulations, it is necessary to enhance training, supervision, and the expansion of the market.
Morphological Relationshipsbetween Clutch and Evaluation ofFecundity Black Apple Snail (Pila polita)

Morphological relationshipsbetween clutch and fecundity of black apple snail (Pila polita) was studied on the 349 clutches (in Dong Thap, Hau Giang and Vinh Long provinces) with the number of: 121, 113 and 115 clutches, respectively, which were collected from May to August 2017.At the same time, four-repeated experiments on rearing of 3 height groups snails (48.0-50.0 mm; 52.0-54.0 mm and 56.0-58.0 mm) were done to determine fecundity. The rearing was carried out in foam containers (60 × 45 × 40 cm) with a density of1 pair of broodstock snail/tank. Results of the study showed that the morphological relationship between clutch weight with clutch dimensions, the length of the clutch with the size criteria is quite tight (R2= 0.6-0.8). The fecundity of black apple snail is 208 eggs/snail, relative fecundity is 6208 eggs/kg snails. Spawning activity of black apple snail is mainly at night, starting from 20 pm to 4 am and lasts up to 8-12 hours. Black apple snail female is able to re-reproduce for the first time (42.7%).However, the ratio of the second batch is very low (8.3%), the average time for re-spawning of black apple snail is 42.2 days.
Preliminary Records of Fish Faunna Species of Perciformes Order in Lower Saigon - DongnaiRiver System

A study was carried out from December 2009 to December 2013. About 300 specimens was collected in lower Saigon - Dongnai river system. The resultsshowed that 81 species belongingto 56 genera, 32 families wererecognized and classified. Gobid family (Gobiidae) wasthe most diverse group, with 16 species (19.75% of the total). Croakers (Sciaenidae) and Gouramies family (Osphronemidae) were the second-most diverse group, consisting of6 species and account for 7.14%. The Sleepers family (Eleotridae) consistedof 6 species and accountedfor 6.17%. Other families consisted1-4 species, accountingfor 1.23 –4.94%. In the total of species classified, there were 38 migratory species, 35 economy valuable fish species, 2 species which are in Vietnam red list (2007, VU-Vulnerable).
Effect of Seeds on Different Umbel Positions to Growth, Development and Yield of Angelica dahuricaBenth. Et Hook. F. at Gia Lam Ha Noi

“Bach Chi” is a medicinal plant and an essential constituent in traditional medicine. The plant has abundant flowers and fruits distributed on the different umbels. Time of flowering, number of umbels, umbel size, seed size and seed yields are different on each umbel position. Seed yield is highest on the secondary umbels (149.5 gr), but lowest on the central umbels. The aims of this paper are to determine whether the seed quality varies with umbel position and any effect of umbel position on growth, development and yield of Angelica dahurica Benth. Et Hook. F (Apiaceae) exists. Seeds were collected at five umbel types (center, primary, secondary, teriary and posterior umbels uppermost). Characteristics of individual umbels (duration of flowering, size) and plants (reproductivity, age, height, basal diameter) were recorded. The results showed that plants obtained from fruits on primary and secondary umbels grew much better (i.e. plant height, root diameter and yield) than those in collected from other umbels. The highest of root yield (3.16 ton/ha) and grade I percentage of roots (94.32%) were obtained from plants derived from seeds harvested on secondary umbels. The fruits on the primary, secondary and tertiary umbels are recommended for high quality of seeds to produce high quality of Bach Chi roots.
Some Biological Characteristics of Scatophagus argus(Linaeus, 1776) collectedin Can Gio District, Ho Chi Minh City

A study was carried out from 01/2010 to 06/2012 on 510 specimens of Scatophagus arguscollected in the canal of Can Gio District, Hochiminh City to identify some biological characteristics of this species. The biological characteristics observed included weight and length (120 specimens); age (30 specimens); male to female ration (120 specimens) reproductive characteristics (180 specimens), food composition in the intestine (60 specimens).. The results showed that the mean ofexploitable size was 88.71 ± 4.36 mm; absolute fecundity power was 289,797 ± 23,297eggs;relative fecundity was 2,772 ± 442 egg/g per female. This species is well known because of high exploitation, valuable food supply and economic value in this area. Beside economic value, it is also used asr ornamental fish. The study showed that this species can live in many kind of environment withfood diversity, etc.
Biochemical Characteristics of Streptococcus spp. Isolated from Tilapia with Hemorrhagic Ddiseasein Some Northern Provinces of Vietnam

The aim of this study was determining biochemical characteristics of Streptococcusspp isolated from tilapia with hemorrhagic diseasein some northern provinces of Vietnam. 60 samples of tilapia with hemorrhagic diseasewere collected from 4 provinces in Hanoi, Hai Duong, Hai Phong and Quang Ninh. Five bacteria species such asAeromonasspp., Pseudomonasspp., Staphylococcusspp., Flavobacteriumspp. and Streptococcusspp.were isolated. The prevalance of Streptococcusspp. was 86.67%. All Streptococcusspp isolates had typical biochemical characteristics, belong to biotype 2 and identified as S.agalactiaeby API 20 Strep system. The antibiotics tests showed that Streptococcusspp. were the strongest sensitive with enrofroxacine and doxycyline.
Molecular Characterization of ThePorcine Epidemic Diarrhea Viruses Isolated in Quang Tri, Thai Nguyen, and Thai Binh During 2013 - 2014

Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea (PED) is a serious and contagious swine disease caused by a virus ofCoronaviridaefamily. PED occurs throughout the year but more common in winter season and over 90% of cases occur in less than 7 day old piglets. In this study, 148 samples of faeces and intestines collected from PED-suspected pigs in the 3 provinces of Quang Tri, Thai Nguyen and Thai Binh during 2013 - 2014 werediagnosed by the RT-PCR method. The diagnostic results showed that 57/148 (38.51%) samples were positive with the PED virus. The nucleotide (nt) and deduced amino acid (aa) analyses based on the partial spike (S) gene sequencing showed that the present PED virus strains were closely related to the reference PED virus strains collected in VietNam previously, sharing 94.8 - 98.6% in nt and 93.5 - 98.8% in aa. The phylogenetic analysis revealed that all the present PED virus strains belonged to the group G1-1.
Establishing Flight Trajectory for UAV Spraying in Agriculture

This paper presented route planning method for agricultural spraying UAV that ensures the requirements of full coverage, low overlap, no leaving-out, and no spraying outside the working area. The routes were determined based onlatitudes/longitudes in the geographical grid, which can be applied to any location on earth. The algorithm was validated by simulation on Matlab/Simulink combined with QGroundControl software. Simulation results show that the main lines were routed parallelly with a distance 2.73% smaller than the spraying width of the UAV. A margin reduction of the working area before route planning helped limit pesticides being sprayed outside the operational area, avoiding pesticide waste and environmental pollution.
Factors Related to Quantity And Quality of OocytesCollectedfromAbattoir Bovine Ovaries

The study was conducted to evaluate the influence of breed, body condition score (BCS- Body condition scores), ovary volume and the largest follicle size on some parameters related to the number and quality of bovine oocytes (classify as A, B level were good oocytes and C, D level were not good oocytes). The results showed that there was no significant difference on the average number of follicles on the ovary surface, the number of oocytes obtained, and the ovary volume between the cattle breeds but the average mass of follicles/ovary. Specifically, the average volume of follicles/ovary in Yellow cattles (6.11g) was higher than in Dairy cattles (2.66g, P <0.05). BCS did not affect the mean follicle size, mass, and the total number of follicle obtained. Ovarian mass, the largest follicle size had an influence on the total number of follicles and the number of oocytes obtained. Ovaries with a mass of 5-10g having the average total number of follicles, the total number of A, B and C, D follicles accounted for the highest number (11.21 follicles; 3.9 and 6.51 oocytes). Similarly, the number of A-B and C-D oocytes obtained from the ovary with the largest follicle size ranged 3-7mm were 4.06 and 7.09, respectively (P <0.005).
Isolation and Selection of Lactic Acid Bacteria for Probiotic Beverage Production from Ginger

Lactic acid bacteria play an important role in the production of fermentedfoods. This study aimed to isolate and select lactic acid bacteria strains from fermented products for application in the production of ginger-based probiotic drinks. Fourty sixstrains of bacteria were isolated. The isolates producedcolonies with 1.0 to 1.5mm in diameter, mainly round, glossy, milky white, and floating pellicle in liquid culture. Six gram-positive, catalase-negativestrains withrod orspherical shaped cellswere pre-selected. Identification by MALDI-TOF revealedthat theybelongto 4 speciesof Enterococcus faecium, Enterococcus casseliflavus, Lactobacillus fermentumand Lactobacillus plantarum. Furtherstudy was conducted for the strain L.plantarumSM1.3. Itwas tolerantto acid(pH 1.0-3.0)and 0.3%bile salts,and ableto produce amylase, protease, and cellulase. This strain inhibited two tested bacteria,E. coliand Salmonellasp.Gene alignment results indicated that the strain SM1.2 belongedto Limosilactobacillus fermentumspecies and strain SM1.3 namedLactiplantibacillus plantarum.Ginger-based probiotic drink usingL. plantarumSM1.3 has good sensory quality andbacterial density and can be stored up to 5 days at 4C.
