Melon (Cucumis melo) is a crop of economic value and suitable for growing in greenhouses in North Vietnam. In the present study, we examined the influenceof storage conditions on thepollen germinability of introduced melon cultivars. The research aimed to determine the optimal conditions to preserve pollensfor application in the production, breeding, and selection of melons. Pollen grains of 4 melon cultivars, i.e.Bach Ngoc, Kim Hoang Hau, Gia Huy, and Makuwa were collected and preserved under different temperatures (25C, 8C, and -20C), relative humidities (20%, 40%, 60%), and organic solvents (acetone, n-hexane, cyclohexane, diethyl ether, and absolute alcohol). Pollen germination rates were tested in vitroin 1% agar medium containing 15% sucrose and 5 ppm boric acidfor3 to 30 days depending on experiments. Results showed that when dried and kept under -20C and 20% relative humidity, melon pollen grains sustainedtheir germinabilityat approx 50% at 30 daysafter storage.
