For breeding new high yieldand quality rice varieties for contributing to the recent variety distribution,the VN20 ricecultivar was developed by the Crops Research and Development Institute of Vietnam National University of Agriculture (VNUA) from thecross segregating populationsbetween E15S and Huong com (R2) lines by the pedigree method. As a result, the VN20 rice cultivars hashad some good agronomical traits, such as short duration, from 135-138 days and yield of 5.8-7.0 tons/ha in the spring season; 112-115 days and yield of 5.0-5.5 tons/ha in the summer season. Additionally, the VN20 hasshown good resistance tosomemajor pests, diseases, and slender grain (length/width ratio 3.66), high gelatinization temperature, low amylose content (12.6%) and carried the fgraromatic gene.Thus, the breeding through cross thehybrid between between aromatic Thermo-sensitive Genic Male Sterile (TGMS) line and high quality rice inbred variety, and was selected by thepedigree method which can generated new rice variety, has good quality and suitable cultivation conditionsin northern of Vietnam.
