Chó và mèo là hai loại vật nuôi gần gũi với con người từ xa xưa. Việt Nam hiện có hơn 5 triệu gia đình nuôi chóhoặc mèo với hơn 7,5 triệu con, tương đương vớisố lượng trâu bò của cả nước. Xu hướng nuôi chó và mèo làm thú cưng ngày càng lớn nên người nuôi quan tâm nhiều đến nhu cầu dinh dưỡng tối ưu để đảm bảo sức khoẻ (con vật có thân hình cân đối, không béo phì) hơn là thoả mãn dinh dưỡng tối đa.Mục tiêu của bài báo này là tổng quan nhu cầu các chất dinh dưỡng cơ bản của chó và mèo dựa trên khuyến cáo của NRC (2006), AAFCO (2014) và FEDIAF (2017) và một số nghiên cứu khác. Chó và mèo đều là động vật ăn thịt, nhu cầu năng lượng cao hơn vật nuôi khác (4.000kcal năng lượng trao đổi/kg thức ăn), nhu cầu protein thôcủa chó (18-23%) thấp hơn mèo (20-33%) nhưng lớn hơn gia súc, gia cầm và nhu cầu một số chất dinh dưỡng cũng rất khác biệt so với vật nuôi truyền thống.
