    Tổng quan này nhằm khám phá các khái niệm về thương mại hoá nông nghiệp(TMHNN),nghèo đa chiều (NĐC)và đề xuất khung lý thuyết nghiên cứu về TMHNNvà NĐC cho các nước đang phát triển. TMHNNlà quá trình chuyển đổi từ sản xuất tự cung tự cấp sang sản xuất theo định hướng thị trường. NĐC xem xét các khía cạnh thiếu hụt của con người bao gồmthu nhập và các dịch vụ xã hội cơ bản. Khung lý thuyết về mối quan hệ giữa TMHNNvà NĐCđược đề xuấtbao gồm 4 thành tố cơ bản, trong đó TMHNN của nông hộ ở vị trí trung tâm phản ánh hệ thống sản xuất tự cung tự cấp, bán thương mại và thương mại hoàn toàn của nông hộ. TMHNN chịu ảnh hưởng của các yếu tố đầu vào bao gồm động lực thúc đẩy từ các yếu tố vĩ mô và các yếu tố bên trong và bên ngoàihoạt động sản xuất của nông hộ. NĐC như là thành tố đầu ra của TMHNN nói lên những tác động của TMHNN làm thay đổi thu nhập, việc làm và phúc lợi của nông hộ. Khung lý thuyết là cơ sở lý luận quan trọng cho các nghiên cứu tiếp theo về giảm NĐC thông qua TMHNN ở Việt Nam.
